Rialto Bridge is the oldest and most famous of the four bridges crossing the Grand Canal.
It is one of the most recognisable architectural and historical symbols in the world, an unmissable stop on any trip to Venice.
Before its stone construction, the crossing at this point of the city was provided by wooden bridges, which burned down several times over the centuries.
At the end of the 16th century, the Republic of Venice decided to build a stone bridge. The competition was won by architect Antonio da Ponte: in 1591, he completed the work, a bridge with a single arch spanning over 28 metres, a true engineering challenge for its time.
To support the weight of the Istrian stone, the arch was set on 12,000 larch wood piles driven into the ground on each of the two banks.
Unlike other bridges, Rialto Bridge was immediately designed as a true commercial street suspended over the water: it consists of three flights of steps. The central one is flanked by two rows of arches that still today house shops and boutiques selling jewellery, luxury souvenirs and silk.
At the centre of the outer ramps is the highest point of the bridge, from which visitors can enjoy one of the most spectacular and photographed views of the Grand Canal.
